CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL: It is that time of year when the poppy flowers along Interstate 15 from Temecula to Corona are in full bloom, creating a beautiful and eye-catching sight. Unfortunately, this spectacle has created several traffic issues and safety concerns. The California Highway Patrol would like warn commuters about being safe when viewing the Super Blooms.
Stopping on the shoulder of the freeway or onramp/offramps is illegal except under emergency circumstances. Doing this places everyone at a higher level of danger due to the speed of freeway traffic, particularly when exiting your vehicle. Remember, all that is separating you from traffic, is a painted white line.
This is a citable offense and you may receive a ticket for making a non-emergency stop on the freeway.
Keep in mind that many drivers are possibly also glancing at the flowers. This is likely to cause the slowing or sudden stopping of traffic in the area. It only takes a second of inattention to veer out of your lane, lose sight of the traffic ahead, or possibly cause a collision.
If seeing this awesome sight is on your priority list, please exit the freeway, legally park your vehicle in a designated parking area, and enjoy a short hike to see the sights from a legal and safe vantage point.
The California Highway Patrol has dedicated itself to the safety, service, and security of the people of California. They ask you do your part in helping keep everyone safe through this beautiful stretch of freeway.
