The family of a Temecula Valley High School student who was injured falling from a second-story floor Wednesday afternoon at lunch time has asked to hold off on a candlelight vigil for their son. The vigil was tentatively set for 6:30p.m. Thursday, May 21, in Old Town Temecula.
The student, Osmani Leyva, a junior, is reported by friends to be in critical condition. Alexia Mersola attends school with Leyva and started a prayer page on Facebook called, #PrayForOsmani.
Jay Watkins, the owner of HAPPY's Cafe on Main Street is a TVHS alumni and former teacher. Watkins is collecting donations for the family and said, "This tragedy hits home for us. Prayers for comfort and healing to everyone involved.
Although the vigil is canceled for the moment, the city of Temecula is showing their heart and love again for a neighbor in need. There have been many events like this over the past year that led Mayor Jeff Comerchero to start a project called, "Temecula has a heart...because nice matters." The entry for art for this project ends tomorrow, but the residents continue to show they have a big heart and want to pay it forward by putting others before themselves which is the theme of the initiative.
Officials from the Temecula Valley Unified School District sent a second press release around 4:30p.m. Wednesday. The district confirms the student fell from a railing. The Temecula police state it was an accident but details of exactly why the student fell are unknown.
The district wrote in the press release, "We are unable to share details about the student's condition. Our thoughts and prayers are with the student and family."
A student was seriously injured at Temecula Valley High School. The Temecula Valley Unified School District issued the following statement:
"There was an accident today at Temecula Valley High School involving a student. School officials called 911 and the student was transported to the hospital. Due to privacy rights, we cannot provide any other information. District personnel is on site to assist other students and staff."
However, the Sun News & Review and was told by a school official the student fell from a second story level. There are conflicting reports on how the accident happened.
One parent reported the student was blind folded and decided to stand on the rail. He slipped and fell, lost consciousness and had seizures.
An unidentified student at the school said they witnessed the accident and the student was only sitting on a rail and accidently fell and was not blindfolded.
The injured student was taken to the hospital by ambulance
An official statement of what happened has not been released at this time.
Counselors will be available to students who need to talk about the incident.
