Thanks to alert drivers calling 911, a quick response from the California Highway Patrol and a little luck, a run-away dog was saved from certain death.
At noon, on Saturday, May 15 the CHP Border Communication Center received numerous 911 calls regarding a dog running in traffic lanes on southbound I-15 just south of Clinton Keith Road. Two CHP motorcycle officers responded to the scene corraled the dog on the right shoulder along with the help of motorists. A leash was placed on the loose dog and the CHP motorcycle officers contacted Animal Friends of the Valley.
While waiting for animal control, the officers escorted the dog off of the highway to alleviate traffic congestion. Animal Friends of the Valley were able to locate the owners on Monday.
The CHP would like to remind drivers to have a high visual horizon while driving to see far enough ahead of them to slow or change lanes and have a safe space cushion between them and the vehicle in front of them in case there are animals or debris in the roadway. Motorists are also encouraged to call 911 if they observe any animals or debris in the roadway.
Animal Friends of the Valley would also like to remind pet owners to make sure their four-legged loved ones are wearing tags or microchipped so they can be quickly identified.
It is assumed the dog owners from now on will keep their pooch on a short leash.
