Health and Wellness: Fall is finally here and football season is back! All around the country people gather throughout the week to watch their favorite professional or college team battle it out on the gridiron.
Families in the valley also ascend to high school stadiums to watch their favorite team compete. Parents sit in the bleachers cheering at the same time hoping and praying they have done all they can to help their child get a competitive edge.
Sometimes parents get anxious when their child gets tackled worrying if they got injured. Injuries are common with children who play sports but their are preventative steps parents can take.Throughout my years in practice, I have noticed most parents aren't utilizing perhaps the most powerful and effective performance enhancer in town ... the chiropractor.
Sure you have heard about us for neck and back pain, but the chiropractic adjustment can give so much more. In my office, I continue to see my athlete's lung capacity improve, strength and stamina improve, the range of motion and flexibility improve, mental clarity and focus improve, balance and coordination improve, anxiety reduced, muscle cramps reduced, and finally the occurrence of injury reduced.
Professionals past and present such as Aaron Rodgers, Jerry Rice, Misty May Trainer, Jonny Daimon, Tiger Woods, and a whole host of others have said chiropractic was an essential part of their routine to both heal from injuries as well as propel them to peak performance.
Football is an impact sport that glorifies huge hits and diving catches both of which can injure the spine whether you feel pain at the point of impact or not. In fact, being teenagers, very few players experience headaches or back pain despite most likely having a poor spine. This is why I see many athletes on a regular basis whether they are experiencing pain or not. Chiropractic adjustments on kids are incredibly safe (even for kids younger than high school) and are a tremendous benefit for the athlete looking to land a college scholarship and pursue professional sports.
I would also like to include cheerleaders into the mix who are another group of athletes who are very active during football season. Cheerleaders place a lot of pressure on their spines from twists and flips to lifts. It is a good idea for members of the cheer team to have regular chirpractic visits.
Personally, I was a three-sport athlete all my life, but football was always my favorite sport. Near the end of every season, however, I would experience devastating heal pain to the point where I could barely run. I also often felt one thigh get sorer than the other after workouts. I started seeing a chiropractor around a junior in high school and noticed after getting my hips adjusted, my thighs were equally sore and I felt more balanced when running!
To my surprise, the chiropractor also actually adjusted my heel and ankle and to this day have never felt pain in my heel again. Many of my athletes not only get their spines checked but also their extremities (such as shoulders and elbows for pitchers, tennis players, wrestlers, etc.)! This dramatically improves recovery time after an injury and will help prevent any other injuries in the future.
Chiropractic should be part of every athlete's weekly routine no matter the age. If you are looking to prevent injury, heal from an injury, or improve your child's performance in their respective sport please visit my office in Murrieta to receive a chiropractic consultation, exam complete with computerized nervous system testing. If you have questions, I would be happy to answer them. Feel free to call 951-304-2242, email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
