TEMECULA: After multiple accidents and two deaths, residents in the communities of Paseo Del Sol and Paloma attended a Public/Traffic Commission meeting on April 27. The residents wanted to address a traffic study the city conducted on the deadly intersections.
On November 9, 2014, a fatal car accident occurred at Pio Pico and Montelegro Way in Temecula. Driver James Borree, 51, of Temecula died hours after he was involved in a head-on car crash on Montelegro Way, according to the Riverside County Sheriff Coroner.
On February 23, 2017, Saila Felver, age 48 also a resident of Temecula was killled at Leena Way and Montelegro Way.
Sheriff's officials reported a sedan was headed northbound on Montelegro Way when the driver crashed into another sedan, which had been turning southbound onto Montelegro from Leena. Two others were hospitalized in the accident.
In addition to the two deaths mentioned there have been numerous car accidents around the Paseo Del Sol and Paloma loop in Temecula since 2004. The loop is 2 miles long and there is only one four-way stop sign near Paloma Elementary School.
In March, city officials initiated a pedestrian and traffic circulation study around the Paseo Del Sol and Paloma loop in response to a letter they received from the Paloma HOA president about the numerous car accidents.
Last week's Public/Traffic Safety Commission meeting addressed the feasibility of installing multi-way stop signs at four locations along Amarita Way and Montelegro Way because of the study.
The intersections are McCabe Drive, Leena Way, Pio Pico Road, and Santiago Road. The city evaluated the conditions at the four intersections that included data collection and an evaluation of sight distance. The city also conducted a "Multi-Way Stop Warrant Analysis" at each intersection to determine if conditions justified the need for multi-way stop controls.
The results of the analysis were presented to city council at last week's meeting.
The commissioners voted to move forward with installing a three-way stop sign at Pio Pico/Amarita Way/Montelegro Way and a three-way stop sign at McCabe/Amarita Way in Temecula. They also proposed pedestrian crossing signs on Montelegro Way, Leena Way, Amarita Way, and Santiago Road.
The next meeting for the City of Temecula Public/Traffic Safety Commission will be held on Thursday, May 25, 2017 at 6:00p.m. at the Temecula Civic Center located at: 41000 Main Street, Temecula, California.
A map of the location of the proposed three-way stop signs can be found on page 12 and a map of the proposed pedestrian crossing signs can be found on page 14.
