MURRIETA: Murrieta is the latest city to be under attack by an attorney from Malibu.
The attorney is using Sacramento’s California Voting Rights Act to line his pockets with our citizen’s money and divide Murrieta into FIVE districts. This should be the people’s decision, not the decision of a lawyer profiting from bad legislation by Sacramento.
THE DISTRICT VOTING SYSTEM WILL CHANGE MURRIETA
A district voting system denies you total representation. Your vote counts only in your district, it can produce local fiefdoms that fail to reflect the views of theentire community, cut’s your voting power by 80%, and discourages election turnout. This canlead to political mischief.
THE DISTRICT SYSTEM IS FATALLY FLAWED
Elected officials will be forced to look out only for their district, not the city as a whole. Under this system you’re likely to get purely politically-motivated policy making. You will lose your access to four out of the five Murrieta City Council members.
DISTRICTS PIT CITY OFFICIALS AGAINST ONE ANOTHER
This leads to a tug of war over limited financial resources. Parochial politics infect city councils, school boards and other agencies. Districts won’t work for Murrieta. Our current system of at-large elections better serves us. Districts will divide Murrieta into five small cities, not one great one. We will lose the unity we now have.
DO WE FIGHT THE MALIBU LAWYER AND SACRAMENTO?
If this matter reaches the lawsuit stage, there’s a chance Murrieta could lose based on results of similar challenges in other cities. If we fight, taxpayers will have to foot the bill of a possible protracted court battle. With all that in mind, our City Council is now in the public-input phase. Do you want to fight to keep us whole?
