Menifee: An accident just after midnight on Monday knocked out power for some residents in Menifee.
The incident happened along Newport Road between Berea Road (also known as Murphy Ranch Road) and Derby Hill Drive.
CAL Fire responded to find a vehicle struck a light pole and a single occupant was trapped.
The light pole was sheared off at the base, and rescue crews had to use the "jaws of life" to open the door and free the driver.
According to witness reports at the scene, the driver was traveling westbound along Newport Road and claimed he was struck from behind by another vehicle, causing him to lose control and collide with the light pole.
The second vehicle allegedly continued traveling westbound on Newport Road and did not stop following the collision, the witnesses said.
Riverside County Sheriff's officials at the scene confirmed they were investigating the incident as a possible hit and run, and there was preliminary evidence to back up the driver's account of events.
The driver was transported by ground ambulance to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries, which were described as "moderate." Crews remained at the scene for approximately an hour until workers with Southern California Edison arrived to shut down the electricity to the light pole.
