Menifee’s Parks and Recreation and Trails Commission will participate in a workshop to discuss the proposed Salt Creek Trail project during its regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday, Jan. 21.
The meeting begins at 6 p.m. in Menifee City Hall, 29714 Haun Road. The workshop is open to the public and the community is encouraged to attend to learn about the trail. The proposed 16-mile Salt Creek Trail, stretching from Menifee to Hemet, is a Riverside County Regional Park and Open Space District project.
The vision is to balance recreational, environmental and functional goals along Salt Creek by building a paved bike path adjacent to a soft surface walking path, where space permits. The trail has been included in the Riverside County’s General Plan since the 1990s. Construction is proposed to begin in Menifee in 2018 and is expected to be completed in five segments.
Funding is available for the four-mile Menifee segment, and for the three-and-one-half mile section in Hemet, through a federal grant to improve air quality and reduce traffic congestion with alternative modes of transportation, such as biking and walking. The project poses no fiscal impact to the City of Menifee.
“Through the city’s recent Parks Master Plan outreach project, we learned that Menifee residents are passionate about walking, biking and hiking, and that having access to more trails is a top priority for the community,” said Mayor Scott Mann. “The proposed Salt Creek Trail is a win for our community and we’re diligently working with the County of Riverside to get it built. We encourage residents to attend this workshop to show support for and to learn more about the proposed trail project.”
